Паскаль - язык программирования высокого уровня. Он относится к компилируемым императивным (процедурным) языкам и изначально создавался для обучения программированию. По этой причине в нем отсутствуют некоторые важные свойства, необходимые для разработки прикладных программ: нет простых средств для работы с массивами переменной длины, нет раздельной компиляции частей программы и т.д. Вместе с тем это язык с четкой логической структурой, довольно надежный. В роли языка для первого знакомства с миром профессионального программирования он почти идеален! Одной из самых популярных реализаций языка является Turbo Pascal - система разработки программ на Pascal, выпущенная фирмой Borland еще в середине 80-х годов прошлого века. Эта реализация не единственная.
Один из разработчиков языка, швейцарский ученый Никлаус Вирт (Niklaus Wirth) разработал язык Pascal для обучения студентов основам Computer Science - науки о вычислительных машинах, системах и информационных технологиях.
Новый язык оказался настолько удачным, что быстро завоевал популярность. Его популярность возросла с массовым распространением персональных компьютеров и выпуском в 80-х годах прошлого века фирмой Borland среды разработки Turbo Pascal. С тех пор Pacsal - это классический язык программирования. Наследником Turbo Pascal стал Delphi - система быстрой разработки приложений для Microsoft Windows (RAD или Rapid Application Development) - и Kylix - система быстрой разработки приложений для X Window System в операционной системе UNIX.
